If you’ve made your way here but aren’t yet subscribed, let me help you with that:

Hi! I’m Evan Arbour - the author of something is better than nothing.

I created this newsletter to help you understand the basics of strength training and nutrition so you can live a stronger life without restriction. I’ve been a personal trainer for almost a decade and the guidance I give my clients the most is: something is better than nothing. Every small action adds up.

This newsletter is based on building fundamental knowledge behind strength training and nutrition so you have the confidence to go after your goals on your terms.

No amount of targeted ads, “miracle product” promises, before/after posts from that celebrity trainer can pull you off track when you are armed with the facts. And that is truly the best feeling.

If this is your first time here - welcome! I am so excited for you to start your journey and I can’t wait to see your progress.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION OF NUTRITION

Read these posts in this order to understand the essentials of nutrition. It is the foundation of all the work you will do. Strength training will enhance your progress especially if you are aiming to build muscle, but without intentional work on your nutrition, you are rowing without a paddle.

  2. Basics of Energy Balance

  3. Basics of Body Composition

  4. Determining Your Daily Calories

  5. Set Up Your Calorie Deficit for Success

  6. Basics of Macronutrients

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION OF STRENGTH TRAINING

Read these posts in this order for the basics on strength. Ladies, if you are reading this: please understand that this section is ALSO FOR YOU. Lifting will not make you bulky or wide. It will give you the definition and curvature to your muscles that you have always wanted. And you’ll feel strong as hell. In order to create a shaped physique, you must build muscle. Cardio alone is not the answer.

  1. Basics of Building Muscle

  2. Implementing Progressive Overload

  3. The 6 Fundamental Movement Patterns

  4. Light Weight vs Heavy Weight: Which One?

  5. Build Your Own Program

  6. Tracking and Adjusting Your Program

Knowledge is your best tool when it comes to achieving your goals. Stepping forward with confidence and a well-thought out plan? There’s no better feeling. Build from these essential lessons in strength and nutrition and nothing can stop you.

There is so much information out there. It's difficult to digest and discern the good from the bad. Thanks for this starting point and looking forward to the forthcoming newsletters.
